A celebration of
FEMINITY
AND YOUTH
IN THE
DESERT
The women and children of the Rendille and Samburu tribes are a vision of
classic, timeless beauty.
Meditative &
Mindful,
they exude the strength of a community working together to preserve ancient traditions...
...while living in harmony with
the natural world.
LIFE IN THE VILLAGE
Traditional village life in this region revolves around community. The village, or ‘manyatta,’ is organized in such way as to unite all of the inhabitants.
Jewelry in the Rendille
Within each ‘manyatta’ lives a jewelry maker who weaves together elaborate beaded confections that adorn the community. Every element of the design, from the choice of bead to the order in which beads are placed next to one another, reveals information about the wearer.
“My goal of documenting unique communities has become more and more urgent to me as my family has grown. I want my kids and their generation to grow up with an understanding and appreciation of the shared humanity that permeates our world. As different as others may seem, we all share many of the same values of family, culture, and a commitment to our natural world.”
